Highlights: I would recommend this course. The subject is presented in a very comprehensive way and it will make sense to someone who has at least a limited background with mechanical thinking and how things work. My son is really looking forward to getting to the second half of the course and putting the information into practice. I think it will bring him a lot of benefit for the rest of his life. It helped ME make an informed big purchase this summer! It may not be as exciting as a Bill Nye or Mark Rober style presentation but it is MUCH richer in content and very useful.

Who is taking the course: My 14 year old son is about half way through this course and I have been going through the material with him in order to answer any questions and make sure that he was retaining the information.

Background: I have experience with light construction, framing, plumbing, wiring and innovating. My son really enjoys building with legos and robotics. His learning style prefers following instructions and step by step guides with hands on activities. His educational strength is Math and his weakness is English.

    Pros of this course:
This course is very comprehensive and details why and how electricity and electronic circuits work. It is very clear and he is a very knowledgeable instructor.

    Neutral:
Let’s face it. The subject is not, in itself, as exciting as other subjects. There is quite a bit of vocabulary and foundation information that students probably won’t be eagerly waiting to tell their friends about. That said, I think it is a necessary part of the course and I think when we get to the hands on parts it will come together to make it much clearer and he will be glad he invested the time in learning those elements.

    Cons:
Sometimes the teacher goes over information several times in the same way. It is clear he wants students to understand but it can get redundant and it is hard to skip ahead because we are not sure when he will go on to something new we need to know.

So far, one lesson had music in the background that was repetitive and distracting from the instruction.

The review questions at the end of lessons are in different formats. Sometimes it will include the answers and I need to cover the answers from the student and sometimes the answers are a separate page and sometimes there are no answers. I am sure this is easily fixed and the instructor will update this in the future, as it is a new course.

Bonus: I, personally, have already used information from the course! I was able to apply the information to selecting an inverter generator this summer for our business! So I KNOW this class is going to help the students in their futures!
